I’ve recently started to consider how the principles of aerodynamics apply to thinking as much as they do race cars. Both need to travel far and fast. Both need to shed the dead weight of superfluous baggage that acts as a parachute, slowing their acceleration.
Too often, we treat thinking like a cautious negotiation—overweight with hypotheticals and hesitation. But the best ideas usually arrive in motion. Momentum clarifies. When you commit early, you learn quickly what holds up and what falls away. The most compelling ideas are clear, concise, and grounded in reality—not because they’re easy, but because they’re built for speed. Let the rest fall off. Pursue the actionable. If something can’t be executed due to the limits of budget, time, skill, or reality, don’t let it linger in your mind, stealing energy from the actionable concept yet-to-come.
In the end, aerodynamic thinking yields aerodynamic brands, built to operate with minimal resistance, drag, or weight. The best brands cut through the noise with minimal friction, and are able to glide through the universe without tearing themselves apart, or over-exerting the team operating them.
