If the sun never set, how much time would you spend on your screen, and how much time would you spend away from it?
We just got back from a 4-day trip to Iceland. With a few close friends, we drove around the southern coast, pulling off wherever we wanted to wander, swim, picnic, or rest. It was rejuvenating to move throughout the day with no set agenda. Without the looming threat of end-of-the-day darkness, we were able to move slowly, without worrying about driving along the winding and windy roads back to our remote AirBNB in low visibility. With endless sunlight, the entire concept of “deadlines” disappeared entirely.
Our working lives are dictated by boundaries, borders, and end caps: the 9 to 5; the 1440 x 1024 pixel frame; the countdown to going live; the space between the present, and your next presentation. It’s a rare treat in modern life to exist in time and space with no constraints.
Up north, the constancy of light breaks down how we usually experience time, creating one of those rare spaces to hatch unconventional ideas, break repetitive habits, question norms, and reassess the assumptions we make about life and work.
